ATF drain and refill

Postby Gray » Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:55 pm

Do any know how much ATF fluid is needed for a drain and refill, not a complete flush. Thanks.

Good thing I didn't listen to the dealership parts guy as after he had asked someone in the service department and also one of the mechanics their combined best guess was 5 - 6 liters. In fact it took exactly 4 liters to do a transmission drain and refill, so if the dealerships have been charging it out at something considerably more you've been robbed. :)

So a complete flush and fill runs 11.25 qt., but just a drain and fill runs 4.25qt?

I'm curious as I will probably be doing this tomorrow.

I did the tranny change this weekend and mine took exactly 4. I bought 5 just in case, but even a day later and some miles the level is right on.

im approaching 30k and will be putting new ATF in for sure. just wanted to see what u guys think about the full flush.

The pathfinders do not have a replaceable filter like the Ford C6 or GM turbo 350. The pathy filter is only replaceable when the transmission is fully disassembled.
A factory recomended drain & fill is 4 qts of atf because you cant drain the torque converter.
A flush is 12 qt + the conditioner. It's replaced under pressure & flusher the torque converter.
If you only have 30k & the fluid isn't burned, dark etc no need to do a flush. Just do the drain & fill.

Should be directly on the bottom of the pan if Im not mistaken. I havent crawled under there yet to see but plan to do the pan drain and refill Monday or Tuesday.

It's on the bottom of the pan...If I remember correctly it's a 19 mm socket. You'll need a copper crush washer, same as the engine oil drain plug. Torque spec on the plug is 25 ft-lb for when you retighten.

I am not sure what year your truck is but keep in mind that the 08 and up are sealed units. the transmission fluid has to be pumped in through one of the lines. there is no dipstick to even check the fluid.

Easy to miss as you need a 10mm socket or wrench to pull out the dipstick, its well hidden.

Yep same here. Its right under the heater box inlet hose on the right side of the engine. I dont really understand what they are accomplishing by doing that. It still has the level indicator....even has a cold level. Therefore I will not take mine to the dealer for every little service.
