Removing the roof rack / cross rails from the pathfinder 08

Postby cane » Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:29 am

Hi all,

I was thinking - I will never use those cross rails & I kinda think it would be a slightly nicer sleeker look.

Has anyone here removed the cross bars from their pathy ?
I had a look & saw the torx screws but not sure about the plastic mouldings that cover the ends ?

I'd be interested in taking them off your hands if decide to get rid of them. Not sure about removal seeing that mine didn't come with any..

They are easy to remove, the tool is in the tire iron change kit.. but I found it easier to use a torx socket on a 3/8 ratchet. after removal only thing shown is the rail. REMOVE the torx c/t the rail and not the bow... after you remove you will just see the hole in the rail where screws went into. Nissan uses a plastic push plug to keep dirt/water out. you could just dab some silicone in hole and wipe smooth also. I think the rails will be a little weak once the bows are removed, just my opinion..

Hey Kevster,

Would it be bad idea to take them off ?
considering it will be weak etc.
Have you taken them off your path ?

Cheers for your help on this.

I have had mine off, but just to move one bow in.. I even installed a 3rd bow. I would say having them removed would be ok, just as long as you never put anything on the rails without the bows..or grab one rail and give it a good yank would be a bad idea.

Hey Kevster,

I've taken out the rails & looks much sleeker now.
Only problem is - I'm left with the holes as you mentioned, for now I have put some rubber tape but where can I get the 'Nissan plastic push plugs you mentioned ?
If the push plugs are hard to hold of , what silicone stuff is best - i guess it would be safer to get the plugs just incase, i sell the path later & put the roof rails back on.

Cheers for the help :)

The plastic plugs may be from the factory only during assembly, get ahold of your Nissan dealer in parts and ask. If no luck, use regular silicone, clear or black, you will only use a small amount to fill the hole to prevent water infiltration.

Hole plugs are available at the hardware store. I took a roof rack off of a Jeep Grand Wagoneer I had and 1/2" hole plugs, with a dab of black silicone around the edges, worked perfect. They have chromed metal hole plugs and black plastic ones.

Not very good pics way to dark to really see. To be it looks like a Mini-van with out the racks.

Also when Gray left the site he took all the pics off of his website. the way he left was very childish

Looks great cane. If the secret service used Pathfinders, that's the way they'd look.
