New TPMS relearning

Postby pearl62 » Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:15 pm

So I got my new wheels and TPMS sensors installed and the TPMS system is not working.

My intention is to run a summer set of wheels and then switch to a winter set, each with their own TPMS sensors. Since it's not working, I contacted the dealer and they informed they could reset and relearn the new sensors for $125 and it would take 1 hour. From what I can understand, it looks like I'll need to do this every time I change the wheels, so maybe twice a year!

Another thought is to simply get my own scan tool with CAN capability to reset the TPMS IDs. From what I've found, the cheapest solution would be a PC based USB to OBDII+CAN tool (like http://www.autoenginuity.com/order.html for $250+$150) and then a TPMS wheel sensor monitor for ~$250.

Yikes!!

Does this sound right?

I read these threads before, but they only seem to help with TPMS reset, not relearning. The only suggestion there for relearning was to go to the dealer.

It seems it needs a scan tool, but not just any tool which provides OBDII reading, but also with the capability to write TPMS IDs over the CAN bus. Only higher end scan tools seem to provide this.

Has anyone else found a solution to provide affordable DIY TPMS relearning? The scenario I have can't be too uncommon...
