New pathfinder owner!

Postby oyarsa » Mon May 11, 2009 8:04 pm

I just bought a 2005 pathfinder. Love it so far, but I've got a question. I noticed in the manual that 91 octane is recommended, but it says that 87 is ok. Anyone know if the 91 octane is really worth it?

In my 2006 I've tried both. On regular I noticed some slight pinging. I couldn't hear it from inside, but if I opend the window and was next to a wall, I'd hear it.

I've switched to Premium and the ping is now gone. I may try the mid-grade and see what happens.

I don't hear any pinging with my 06.

I've switched to 90 octane anyways as it's the same price comparing to other stations selling 87 octane.

I used 87 for the first several months. It drove fine and I hadn't noticed any pinging. I was driving with the window open up a twisty mountain road and heard it pinging moderately. I noticed it several other times and the computer didn't seem to adjust it out. I switched to 91 and the pinging went away. It will still ping a little when towing a trailer, so maybe the computer allows some pinging.

I have an 05 and haven't noticed any pinging. Of course with the 05, it's hard to hear anything over all the other squeaks, bumps, and rattles. That's what we get for going with the first year of a redesign.

I can verify that it certainly doesn't affect gas mileage to go with a higher octane.

I normally buy the shell 87 nitrogen gas and it does give a faint pinging sound. I'll run some 91 in it to see if it gets rid of it or try some octane booster.

I go by strictly what the owner's manual says. I don't want the dealer coming back to me one day if I bring it in for a warranty repair, and they tell me it's voided cause I never put premium fuel in the tank.

I just purchased my Path a couple of weeks ago....dealer told me "Nissan recommends premium grade fuel but it isn't required. You might hear some pinging if you don't use it, or if you mix it between premium and regular, but that's all. It's your choice what you use." From a Nissan dealer. Only thing they were specific about that might void warranty was the oil...must use 5W30 according to the dealer and the dealer's service dept manager - they both told me that.

Welcome!

My '09 SE has 3,000+ miles so far, and I have been using 87. No pinging yes, and mpg has been 18~19 combined. Since it says "premium fuel recommended," I'll keep using 87 until it starts to ping or to run poorly.

I use 87 as well with no problem in my 08 Se. I'm getting 17.5 to 18.5 mpg

I've got 65,000 miles on my 06 Pathfinder and have never used anything but 87 octane.Absolutely no need to use anything other than that.

Hey Guys,
I use 87 too and have been happy. But I wonder about using higher octane when the engine is under a load, like towing or driving in mountains in the summer.

Has anyone compared grades under these conditions?
