Paint Chip on Hood

Postby MonkeyMike » Tue Jun 02, 2009 5:27 am

ive got a paint chip, approx 1/4" diameter, on the front surface of the hood... not on the edge, but on the vertical-ish front surface of the hood.

i cant tell if it was a rock chip, or a paint failure, but either way, the sheet metal is exposed and has started to rust. is there anything i can do myself to fix it?

Maybe get some touch-up paint and cover it up. If you don't want to do that, you can go to a local body shop. I'm sure most do spot repairs. I need to get a few dings like that fixed. Someone put a nice scratch in the passenger side rear quarter panel and it is down to the sheet metal.

i already talked to the body shop in town. its always more than you expect. i have a cab-door battle scar on the side of my front bumper so i was thinking of getting that fixed too. but most pressing is the rusted spot on the hood. i may just bite the bullet and pay to have it fixed. ... then buy a bug deflector so the leading edge of the hood is protected.

I'd get real fine sandpaper and buff out the rust. Use some paint thinner to clean out the dust and let it dry for a few minutes. Then apply touch up paint to it. I'm no paint/body specialist but that's what I'd do. If it starts to rust again, then I'd seriously suggest taking it to a shop.

Another suggestion is contacting a local dealer. They have body specialists who come by and do small repairs on trade ins. Maybe one of those people can help you out. I'm thinking a body shop may try to rip you off stating the entire hood needs to be repainted.

One alternative to the bug deflector is a clear bra. I personally don't care for the bug deflectors so the clear bra is a nice alternative. You can also have it cover portions of the bumper, mirrors, headlights, & fenders.

As far as the rust goes, if you don't want to pay a body shop, you should be able to lightly sand it yourself to remove the rust and then cover it with touch up paint. A quick google search should provide several how-to's.
