The picture is of the transfer case. The driveshaft mentioned is at the left middle and bolts to the front output of the transfer case.

I'd jack up a front wheel and spin it with your foot while laying under the car. The front drivetrain is always connected and if built like every transfer case I've ever been around, should spin the chain. If you jack up a rear wheel and do the same thing, it won't spin the chain but will help pinpoint where the noise might be coming from. There's alot to make noise in there. I've had a bad chain before and it sounds like a metallic slapping noise. Bad bearings, and there are alot in there, make more of a gritty groan or scrapping noise.

Good Luck.

I asked the nissan guy how and why it broke and he replied "The 2005 model of the front propeller shaft was made of cheap parts, and we replaced it with a new and improved one". then i asked how long will this one last and if theres anything i can do to avoid future damage? and he replied "this new one shouldent break". oh well at least it was covered by the 60,000 mile warrenty.
