Feedback on OME suspension

Postby IcedTeasley » Wed Aug 05, 2009 6:23 pm

I see on your signatures that a few of you have OME suspension on your R51s. I would appreciate any feedback and advice concerning these kits. I'm considering buying mine from Rocky Road in UT.

Already read the other OME threads. Just want to know if everyone has worked out their alignment issues.

20,000 miles, so far, so good -- alignment is good, no problems there, tires are wearing more than I'd like (driver?), but they are wearing evenly.

The alignment was tough for the guys to figure out, but they finally got it. It seems most 4x4 shops are not used to 4 wheel alignments.

Thumbs up for Rocky Road though...

No problems here either. I have 20k+ on the OME and it is still doing fine. I sometimes hear a rattle up front when going over really rough ground, almost as if the coil is banging against the shock. Last alignment was pretty close to spec, although a bit off. No uneven wear on the tires & no adverse affect on driving. On pavement, I run my tires very stiff (~48psi). That + the OME really makes for a solid ride in town, and I have to say the OME handles wonderfully off the pavement. I've really pushed mine quite hard & I'm still happy. But, I'm also still waiting for Ragpoa to post about his new suspsension setup using ICON, but it's like he fell off the face of the planet.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be buying my setup in the fall. Waiting is the hardest part.

@ NVSteve...

I just picked up some OME 1" rear lift springs and they are massive. Almost twice as thick and way longer than the stock springs. It looks like they will lift the rear more than stated and they may make the ride to stiff.

How is your street driving experinence with these springs?

I have the Bilstein 5100 I'm going to set according to the rear.

Any insight would be appreciated.

We're getting used to it though! :D

Also, cannot say much about OME since I haven't got them, but I have heard nothing but bad news on rocky road. Just use caution.

Is there a thread that you know of on "Rocky Road" that I can check out?

Yes, they are certainly beefier than the stock springs, but you should know by now that the stock springs are better relegated to a car. Let's just say I went from bottoming out on pavement bumps & dips, to being able to drive over the top of mostly anything without bottoming out. Some people prefer the marshmallowing of a suspension, some prefer it to be stiff. Since I get off the road a bit, the stock suspension was absolutely useless. I honestly can't remember how much extra clearance I got, but I think it was around the 2" mark. That may sound like a lot, but it really isn't. There's a thread floating around here where a few of us posted our before and after measurements, so that would probably be of use to you.

This is the only thread I run across in a quick search.

Mainly complaining about communication. But I know I've read other stories where folks have been lessed then impressed.

blink32 has some pictures of the OME springs next to the OEM springs, off the vehicle & on the floor. I didn't save the link to his photos, so maybe if you PM him, he'll post it up here or at least send it to you.

Quick question for those who have replaced your rear springs. (w/lift springs)

Did you need a coil spring compressor to install the new rear lift springs or were you able to get the spring in by unbolting the LCA from the Knuckle?
