Strange brake rotor issue on an 05 pathy.

Postby PC05 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 5:01 pm

Good evening, New member here. Been reading and viewing for about a year now. After owning 2 maximas which were flawless we had a child and bought a 05 LE in December of 08 with 33k miles. Have had no issues whatsoever and the wife loves it, it is hers anyway. We are getting ready to go on vacation and I pulled the wheels to look at the brakes and found a strange issue I have never seen before. The front rotors only on the inside of them look like the pads are barely making contact with the rotor. The left side is far worse than the right. She has noticed a small vibration when stopping hard from about 70-80 mph. Do I just need to turn the rotors, as the pads look to be in great shape, or what do I need to do.?

Thanks guys.

Take a look at the slide pins for the calipers. The caliper could be hung up on the pins & not sliding freely. Or the piston in the caliper could be sticking & not putting equal pressure on both the inner & outer pads.

I know that whenever I have done brakes (although I have yet to do them on the Pathfinder) one pad always seems to be closer to the rotor than the other one. Try spinning the hub with the wheel off and watch the clearance to see if it changes, that may indicate whether you need to turn the rotors. Also, have your wife step on the brakes while you look at the wheel. Watch your fingers. See if its making good contact and then releases.

yea, sounds like a sticky pin issue .... Probably a good idea to just replace pads, rotors and check the calipers and clean / lube the pins , flush the fluid ......

I just replaced my rotors and pads, had 35K on them and they were getting warped ... pads still had 40% but I wanted to go with a better pad .... Centric Rotors and Akebono Pro ACT ceramic pads ....

it's not an issue, they all do it.
