Winter tires/wheels for 2009 SE

Postby CRXguy » Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:16 am

Hello,

I'm in Canada with a '09 US-spec SE model. It came with 17" wheels with 265/65/17. Looking for a winter setup and would like to downgrade to a 16" setup. Has anyone done this? Were you able to find cheap alloys online, or does Nissan have OEM 16" steel wheels that fit?

Thanks.

Tirerack is a good choice for steelies...but a quick look at their site shows they're out of stock. 265/70-16 is a stock size I believe and will fit fine.

I'm usually a pretty big fan of snow tires but I was quite impressed with how the PF did in the snow last year. I considered snows this year but decided to go with a really good all-season and see what happens. Ice is about the only spot I was concerned last year and the OEM Generals are rated bad on ice. Hoping these Michelins perform much better.

I'm running 265/70r17. You can do this so you dont have to change rims. I'm running BFG A/T and there snow rated, great on the highway, sand, light mud. They last along time ( I've had almost 90k on a set) as long as you rotate them often.

Some of the base model Xterra's have 16" steel wheels. A local couple that own an Xterra bought my 16" Factory alloys from me off of Craigslist to upgrade their steel wheels.

The parts guy at the Nissan dealership I bought the car from quoted me $155CDN for 16" OEM steelies. Seems a bit expensive, compared to $80-90 I got quoted for 3rd party steelies at the local tire shops. He says I might get vibration using the 3rd party wheels. Is he full of it?

Are the wheel specs on newer Frontier's/Xterra's the same as the R51 Pathfinder? I might have to look up my local classifieds instead. Found some great deals on tires, but I'm having troubles getting wheels. :(

You can try and find a used set of wheels. You can search the Frontiers & Xterra's as they came with steel wheels on the base model. The Pathfinder spare wheel is also a steel wheel.

Try www.car-part.com

the S and SE came with 16" alloys that lots of ppl changed to aftermarket, so there should be lots on your local Craigslist.

The only prob with aftermarket steels is that they are often not hub-centric like the factory, you have to be carefull with the wheel nuts, making sure you do them evenly to center the wheel.

Canadian R51's came with BFG's, US ones with General Grabbers.
