Might be a dumb tire question.....

Postby jasunderland » Wed Dec 08, 2010 12:45 pm

I have an '08 LE with 18" OEM Rims.

The stock tire size is 265 60 18

Does anyone know if the 265 65 18's would fit?

Also, how come at tirerack.com the 65's are cheaper then the 60's? If I am not mistaken, aren't the 65's bigger?

Forgive me if my question is a silly one..,

My quick math says you should be fine. I run 265/75/16, which have an overall diameter of 31.65". Your 265//65/18 would have an overall diameter of 31.56".

265/60/18 = 30.52"
265/65/18 = 31.56"
265/75/16 = 31.65"
265/70/16 = 30.61"

Formula is (Width*(Profile/100)*2/25.4)+Rim Size

I included your original tire size above, as well as what was stock on mine.

Also, note that I've experienced a decrease in fuel economy since I changed my tires (I think). Bigger tires weigh more, have higher rolling resistance, and rotational mass. My tires increased the unsprung weight on my truck by ~100lbs, and increase the height of the tires by over 1".

Less common tire sizes will drive the price up more than anything because 1. They don't make as many of them so the fixed costs are higher and 2. there's not as much demand/competition for that size.

You will notice a performance difference going to a taller tire. My Tundra had the same size as the Pathfinder 265/65-17 and first set I went with the cheaper 265/70-17 and was surprised with the performance/economy hit. Switched back to the 65 next time and was again surprised with the bump in performance/economy. I wouldn't do it to save a few bucks....my couple cents.

Thanks for the reply's fellas.

I think the cost difference was about 5-10 bucks a tire. I was more interested in the bigger profile, but I also forgot about the preformace losses.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. When it is time, I will stick with the 265-60's.

A coworking just put Firestone Destination A/T's.

Anyone had any luck with those?

Last month I put on a set of P265/65R-18 Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10's. About 3 days later the Seattle area got hit with snow. They worked really well. I am really happy with them.
