Postby kidhaulinpathfinder » Tue Dec 14, 2010 10:26 pm

Sorry if this is a newb lame question..ha

To install the rear shocks, can you do it without jacking up the suv?
Also there are 2 bolts on each end that need to be removed right?

Need to remove rear tires to get to bolts....so unless you can remove tires without jacking....

Bolts on each end. Top ones are usually a real bear to get loose. Hard to get to the bolt and even more difficult to get torque on them.

You have to remove the rear wheels so jacking up the vehicle is required. There is a bolt up top that is in a very tight space and is a little tricky to remove but the bottom bolt is easy. I had to slide a pipe over my ratchet for leverage to break the bolts.

Oh ya you do have to remove the wheels...lol

Thanks for the input. My mechanic wanted $75 and I was like... NO WAY!
If its 4 bolts to get them out.. ya ill do it myself :)
Once the bolts are out the shocks can be removed by hand right?

Im debating if I want to try the fronts myself or pay $200 to have my mechanic do it?

If you are staying standard as I did - Munro Reflex suv , buy them from Pepboys at about $45 each, then use the pay for one fit two deal.Ii got mine done for $18.
beats the hell out of DIY even though you are most likely capable.

Some folks have had a horrible time breaking the top bolts loose particularly on older models. I had to put some serious ass into my 2008 model....so I can imagine an '05 or '06 would be pretty rough. If it's an older one I'd spend the $75 myself....

You'll need an alignment and a good spring tool to do the fronts so $200 might now be a bad investment if you don't have the tools. Some places with rent spring compressors cheap.
