4wd top speed?

Postby NYPathfinder » Mon Dec 27, 2010 10:21 am

I didnt find anything in the owners manual about speeds. just how to use it. I have an 07LE. How fast can i got if i put it in auto? 4hi? and obviously 4lo is really really slow. I've been putting it in auto and shutting it off around 40mph.

4hi, shouldnt switch on/off at speeds exceeding 60.

if its on, u can exceed that speed easy. i once forgot it on after offroading and drove more than 50 miles, speed exceeding 95.

4lo, u cant even switch it till ur fully stopped and pressed brakes.
top speed never tried in 4lo

You must be a lawyer or something...

Page 5-20 in the 06 manual specifically says:

"The 4H position provides greater traction.
Avoid excessive speed, as it will
cause increased fuel consumption and
higher oil temperatures, and could
damage drivetrain components.
Speeds over 62.5 MPH (100 km/h) in 4H
is not recommended."

So there... :)

Lol. No not a lawyer. Thanks for the info. Guess I should search a little harder next time.

No worries. Some forums will flame you all day long. RTFM! haha.

We're not so bad here... :)

I noticed just below the 4HI recommendation is the 4LO:

"The 4LO position provides maximum
traction. Avoid raising vehicle speed excessively,
as the maximum speed is approximately
31 MPH (50 km/h)."

I often drive well above 60mph in 4 HI, although only in brief spurts (dirt straightaways). I'm sure the mpg will take a hit, but I've never had excessive temperatures because of it.

You can leave it in auto at any speed, the instruction in the manual is regarding putting into 4HI.

You don't. But based on my own experience & a lot of crazy posts on the Australian Pathfinder forum, I'm not worried one bit with the type of driving I do. I'm always far more worried about binding the wheels in extremely slow/more hardcore conditions. Well, that and having a rock punch a hole/breaking something underneath.

You cant tell but I beleive there is a heat warning light that will come on if the tranny gets to hot.
