4X4 Light Flash

Postby canadasnow » Fri Jan 07, 2011 5:51 am

Just curious....anyone know why when i put it in 4x4 and then back into 2 wheel drive the light flashes sometimes for 2minutes before it goes back into 2 wheel drive. Other times it takes 5 seconds?

Seems to be a common "issue". Mine depends on speed and if i'm turning. It usually turns off quickly if I'm driving slow or making turns. I've had it stay on for 30 miles on the highway once and didn't kick off until I came to a stop at the exit ramp.

I find that when the light is flashing, I need only turn the steering wheel while in motion, and it goes into 2wd right away. If moving at highway speed, tapping the brakes or changing lanes can sometimes get it to stop too.

Basically, I think the 2 front tires need to be spinning at a slightly different speed to get it to 'pop' out of 4wd.

either that or reverse for less than a yard.
i found it takes longer to turn off if u disengage it while the wheels are turned.
make ur wheels straight then disengage.

curious to know the science behind this, when the car is brand new, it always engages/disengages instantly.
