Everything you never need to know about drag racing an R51..

Postby BMXPath » Thu Dec 06, 2007 10:16 am

Track info...
San Antonio Raceway in Marion, Tx. Southeast of SA on IH 10.
http://www.sanantonioraceway.com
Elevation, 553 ft.

Vehicle info...
05 SE 2wd, 55,000 miles, Mobil 1 synthetic, Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil, K&N filter element, original 16" wheels and tires. I dropped the full size spare, took out all the jack tools, and all my own junk that I haul around most of the time.

Previous results...
My best previous time was a 15.55 @ 87.38. That was on 5/16/07. It was a typical, warm spring day in Texas. That night it got down to about 70 degrees. I have been one other time, it was around September. I couldnt get my time near my previous run at all. My best pass that night was around a 15.68, or something (I couldnt find the slips this morning). It was pretty hot that day.

I hoped that going on a colder night would improve my ET alot. My personal goal was to get better than 15.50 and break 88 mph, with my Pfinder basically being stock.

Btw, I knew that my Pfinder was capable of it, just wasnt sure if it would do it with me in it. A friend of mine took a few passes in it back in May. His best was a 15.48 @ 87.96. Oh yeah, he does weigh about 130 pounds less than me. Yeah, I am a big guy. 6' 2" at about 320.

On to last night...
Yesterday was a typical, warm winter day in Texas. The high temp during the day was in the 70's. When the sun dropped it started to cool off pretty quick...

7pm 63degrees 45% huminity
8pm 58deg 56%
9pm 53deg 67%
10pm 52deg 67%
11pm 50deg 71%

I got to the track about 7:30 pm. Ran my first pass at 8:05pm... 15.53@ 88.01. Already beat my previous best time, cool! :D

After redlighting 3 times in a row, I pulled a 15.46 @88.15! That was at 9:56 pm. Met my goal!

My last two runs were my best of all... 15.30 @ 88.90 and 15.31 @89.20. I ran those at 10:56pm and 10:59pm, respectively.

I wonder how it would run on a really cold night?

Cold air does help with the mixture. The colder the better to a degree anyway. That's why you need intercoolers for turbo's to cool the compressed air. I don't think you will get much better than the times you got, becasue any colder and the tires would harden and lose grip. If you did a run with the engine up to temp and tranny cool with 50 degree temp, it would be even better. Your tranny was probably running hot during the final runs.

Great posting BMX, did you notice much frame twisting and if so have you looked at possible frame stiffening solutions. Thanks.

brick,

Interesting point. I have never thought about frame flex. This being the first vehicle that I have ever drag raced, I dont think I would even know if it did. :o

Here is something I have thought about, since you mentioned it...

Is frame twisting any concern on a stock, 15+ second, vehicle that does have a full frame chassis?
