How to remove rear bumper?

Postby bdsams » Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:13 pm

I managed to back into a small pole and got a decent sized dent in the bumper...dealership wants 700 to replace it, but i want to try and take it off, pop the dent out and see how it looks.

Remove all screws and clips along the front edge, (at quarter panel) the bottom and underneath the lift gate. You have to remove the tail lamps to access the clips hidden underneath them too.

The bumper also snaps in along the quarter panels. the little tabs can break when you remove the cover so be careful.

Is there a way to fix the clips if they break? I only need to loosen one side to try and pop the dent out, any advice on how to remove the clips, is this done from underneath...

Trying to understand is all this done from under the vehicle or is it done from inside the lift gate area?

The clips should be re-useable if taken off carefully, it's the little tabs on the cover that can break.

I think all my tabs look like that from smashing it into the ground causing the sides to pop out during a couple off road adventures. My bumper stays on though so dont panic if you break a few.

Thanks for the help so far, do you pop the tabs out from underneath ( i would image with a flat head screwdriver?)...

Really want I want to do, is currently the side is popped out but the tabs dont appear to be broken, ideally id like to find a way to pop them back in and try to pop the dent out without removing the entire bumper as its in an easy to reach location.

There's no good way to release them, you just have to gently pull on the cover. A screw driver may scratch the paint on the quarter panel.

Replacing front or rear bumper of pathfinder is a simple operation...Remove the Mounting screw on mud flaps and take mud flaps out..Now remove the inner fender shield by removing its screw and pushpin fastener..Check out if this car has a rear door tire carrier equipped and if so remove the bolts tire carrier ,the rubber bumper and tire carrier guide.Detach the clips securing the bumper's upper half and then remove nuts connecting to frame and bumper brackets..And remove the bumper off .
