Metalllic clunk sound when going from first to second gear

Postby dawgn86 » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:31 pm

Been meaning to ask this question....2006 Pathfinder..4.0 auto

whenever I leave and the trans shifts from 1st to second gear, there is a metallic clunking sound coming from the rear...it has done this since I bought it brand new and now has 85350 miles. The noise hasnt gotten any worse..doesnt do it shifting in any other gear...sounds like its around the rear drive shaft at differential area...

any ideas?

Are you sure it's not the ABS self test at about 12 MPH? It's normal for the vehicle to do this once each time after it's started. One way to isolate would be to put the transmission in 1 to make sure it doesn't upshift and listen for the sound.

What is this ABS self test you speak of?

The ABS systems kicks in for a second (the pump, but not the brake) when you hit 10MPH. Sounds like ABS, and could be interpreted as a metallic sound.
