seat belt retractor

Postby Col R » Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:10 pm

The drivers side belt will retract readily when I unbuckle Seems to be a little lazy.

Is is possible to increase the retraction tension for this?

i think you mean that it does not retract readily? :?
i noticed that about mine recently
it may be a warranty issue (10 yr wrnty on seat belts)

Nissan has a kit for this problem. Kit consists of a thin piece of wire used to clean the seatbelt "D" rings and a piece of adhesive backed plastic "tape" (for lack of a better term) that gets applied on the "D" ring. The plastic makes the "D" ring surface slippery so that the seat belt slides through the "D" ring easily. There's a TSB on the issue and it's a little tricky to get the "tape" onto the "D" ring, but it works! It might be warranty covered, but, if not, the kits are only a couple dollars.

I did mean that the seat belt will NOT retract. Very observant.

Looked up the warranty (thanks for the reference) but it specifically states it covers only the original owner.

Any part part numbers for the fix?

"This warranty covers any Nissan supplied seat belt
or related component, that fails to function properly
during normal use within ten (10) years of the date
the vehicle is delivered to the first retail buyer or
put into service, whichever is earlier. Warranty repairs
are free of charge for parts and labor."

i'd be surprised if i am incorrect about this...........
the ten years does not exclude subsequent buyers
it means that the clock starts on the day of the new vehicles' delivery to the its' first purchaser on a retail basis

The seat belt tape set is part # 87880-79900. The TSB is NTB01-005B, titled "seat belt retracts slowly." It addresses numerous Nissan models from 1998 through 2009. For a link to the TSB:

(And don't ask me why it's on a mortgage site! I searched it and tried it and it does bring you to a pdf of the TSB!)

sometimes this is like panning for gold. Just be patient an somebody knows the answer and it is usually a nugget.

Thanks so much.

Online price for the kit is about 3.50 but the shipping is 11.00. I think I will go by the dealer see if they have it. The instructions look simple enough.

Are there preferred online sources, reasonable price and good customer service? or do you just shop?

Thanks again

Rick
