Faulty fuel sensor 05 Diesel Pathfinder

Postby besom76 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:38 am

I have an 2005 Pathfinder which has developed a fault with the fuel sensor. My local mechanic has removed the fuel tank and fuel sender neither of which have a fault...has anyone else had this problem and do you have any suggestions??

Very common problem. The issue is the fuel level sensor in the tank. Did the mechanic properly check the resistance across the sensor or just give it a visual check? Are you getting any check engine light codes? There's a warranty extension and a recall for these fuel level sensors. See the threads below for additional info and let us know if you have any questions.

I just realized you've got a diesel. I'm not sure if it's the same part as the gas engines. Just call your local dealer and give them your VIN to see if your vehicle is covered by the exteneded warranty or any recalls.

Thanks deermjd,

I'll take a look at the other threads you sent and see if there's anything new. I've checked the VIN with the dealership and there are no outstanding recalls on it unfortunately.

My mechanic removed the fuel tank and the fuel sender and checked the resistance of the sender too none of which seemed to show a fault. He also check the connections on the dashboard but all appear OK.

I don't have any check engine lights on.

It seems like my only option is just to replace the sensor and see if that makes any difference...I'll just be annoyed if it gets changed and makes no difference after having to spend so much money on one part!

That's odd. There's a possibility that you have a loose connection somewhere. Did your fuel guage work intermittently or did it stop workly completely? I had a check engine light and an error code when my fuel sensor went out. Again, Im not sure if the diesels have the fuel sensor as the gas models, but for the gas models the design of the replacement fuel level sensor is a little more robust than the original.

Hi

It just stopped working all of a sudden...all very strange and a bit annoying as I'm about to take it on a 2000mile trip so will go by the trip computer rather than the fuel gauge!!

Thanks for your help!
