2005 Swooshing

Postby martyf250 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:53 am

I have an 05 with 80,500. I just did the radiator bypass a few weeks ago. I also have the timing chain issue i need to get fixed as it has the infamous whine.

I just noticed last week i am starting to get a swooshing sound coming from what appears to be the front end of the vehicle. I did replace all U joint aout 5K miles ago. Anything i should look into? The frequency decreases as speed decreases and then right before you come to a stop it goes away

Hard to place that sound. The way you describe, it sounds as though its coming from the driveline.

Give your wheel bearings a check over. I don't think this sounds like a driveshaft issue. Any chance you could record the sound?

I just replaced all 4 pads (not rotors) about 5K miles ago as well

How about tires wearing funny? Usually happens on my rear tires though... Kind of a 'whoop-whoop-whoop' sound that is speed sensitive.

good point about the tires....they are still original general grabbers with 80,500 but still in decent shape with decent tread left...no abnormal wear that i can think of

That is a ridiculous amount of miles on one set of tires! I don't think I've ever done better than 80000km on a set of tires, and the truck seems to be harder on them.

You could have a slipped belt in them, and never know it...

i figured that was a crazy amount of miles. The side walls are starting to get a tiny bit dry rotted and cracked

time for some new duratracs! though with that kind of mileage, you may need a tire more biased for longevity.... :)

EDIT: My 1000th post!

I'm almost thinking the sound has something to do with wheel bearings but not sure..i'll keep an ear to it and see if the sounds gets progressively worse

Rotor warped? My first guess would have been u joints, but you have that covered. Still, it could be driveline related, which has the symptoms you describe. Maybe a bad yoke (I've had plenty of those)?

Did the 05's come originally with general grabbers? If so 80K miles is crazy. I'd have to find some of those next time. My 08 had the BFG Trail tires that didn't last 30k miles.

On my old truck I'd get 100,000KM (60,000 miles) out of a set of BFG AT's so 80,000KM isn't THAT much. However it may be alot for the grabbers. Just my .2 cents
EDIT: HOLY CRAP are we talking MILES here? If so GET A NEW SET OF TIRES NOW! Those are undoubtedly a safety hazard if it's 80k Miles

Why a hazard if the tread is still fine ?
