Timing Belt

So can anyone advise me how to troubleshoot timing belt problem? My friend took the vehicle said it had a high pitch whine,before itquit,then mad a bunch of racket when he tried starting it,,dont know where to begin,I'm thinking timing belt skipped,any tips much appreciated

The 3 liter that is in the pathfinder doesn't run well when it has skipped time.

It will run but it is also an interference engine so will self destruct when it gets too far out of time.

I would guess that the noise you heard when trying to start it was your valves smacking the pistons and in that case you are SOL. There is about zero room for error on a 3.0 when it comes to timing belt replacement intervals. (105,000 miles)

With that said, the timing belt is up front and while it is not that hard to change, your average mechanic can do it in 4 hours for about $400.
