OIL leak!

Just purchased an 89 4WD and on the way home with it discovered a rather bad oil leak. Not being up on the V-6, my old hardbody had the 2.4 motor need to ask if there is a common area for these to leak badly. The drain plug was dry, as was the oil filter area and pass side valve cover, mainly comes down from the rear across the rear cross member that's ahead of the exhaust y pipe. First thing that came to mind was like a rear cam seal then remembered this is a SOHC motor. Any ideas as to where to start? hope its not a rear crank! thanks all, and remember I'm a just joined nubie so go easy. LOL
