Transmission problem - 1995 Pathfinder SE 4x4

Postby crkdcj » Sun Aug 19, 2012 5:12 am

Every once in a while the truck feels like it drops out of gear. I have an automatic transmission, but when I start to move it feels like a manual transmission starting in third gear - very sluggish. I have to put it in first gear and then shift up. Also doesnt feel like it will shift into overdrive on the highway. Problem is this doesnt happen all the time and there doesnt seem to be an pattern to when it does. It will go weeks without a problem. Transmission fluid has been changed. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Starting off in 3rd gear is what happens when a trans is in "fail-safe" mode. There's a procedure you have to go through to retrieve the codes in the FSM.

Thanks. Do you know what can cause the transmission to go into "fail safe" mode. Trying to determing if I need to pay for someone to take it apart.

"Fail safe" mode for the automatic transmission usually occurs due to an electrical problem, not a mechanical issue. Checking for stored transmission codes is the first step.
