First Post - "Rumble Strip" Vibration, Here's What

Postby ADG » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:43 am

First Post. Thanks for listening. I've searched various posts.

1989 Pathfinder, 2WD, 5 speed, 6 cyl, 2-piece driveshaft, north of 250,000 miles

UPDATE: It appears to be the differential; bad knocking, vibration when up on the stands and running in gear. Anyone have an idea on replacement costs for a remanufactured unit?

Symptoms:
Overall low-frequency vibration, very much like the rumble strip sound at the emergency lane
Happens during acceleration, even at 1% gas. Happens at all speeds
Happens after clutch is pushed in while underway for several seconds then smooths out
DOES NOT happen when decelerating under load
DOES NOT happen at a stop with clutch in and motor revved
DOES NOT happen at highway speed with engine off (!!)

What I've done:
Tightened all lug nuts. Newish tires all around
Replaced driveshaft center bearing assembly (old boot blown)
Replaced forward driveshaft u-joint with Moog

What I HAVEN'T done:
Replace rear driveshaft u-joints, although no discernible play
Check balance on all four tires (I don't have a spare to change out with each tire)
Check driveshafts for runout
Put the truck up on stands and run in gear (going to this morning)
Check motor mounts
Check front end components

All help will be appreciated!

Best Regards,
Larry
