2003 Mystery problem

Bought a 2003 chillkoot edition with 175000 km.
runs great when cold. At one point the engine gets very weak from one moment to the other. At the same time gas consumption doubles.
Some times is runs great on the highway for 100km. When I'm in the city with stop and go traffic the phenomenon appears quickly.
I had the car with my trusted mechanic. He gave up after a week. I had it at the nissan dealer. They charged me 1000 bucks without any result.
Is there anyone out there with the same problem.
Any ideas are welcome.

That is quite a mystery. I used to work at Sherwood Kia beside Sherwood Nissan and I know that there are a couple of Nissan guru's there who rocked R50's. I am not sure if they are there anymore but it may not hurt to run it over there and see if any of them are still there and know whats up.
