Is not this QX4 basically an R50 Pathfinder with some extra goodies that will probably fail on me?

The QX4 is a heavily optioned version based on the R50. Whether those "extra goodies" will give you problems is impossible to say.

I see you post a lot on this forum, and you are very knowledgeable. I also have an 05 Pathfinder that the tranny just failed on. The dealership says its the coolant in the transmission problem, but when I took it apart I didn't see any indication of coolant.

I'm just wondering if there are any known issues with my QX4 that I can try to mitigate like the radiator bypass fix I should have done on the 05 Pathfinder...

The radiator coolers were never an issue on the older Nissans. Ironically, when Nissan bought out Calsonic, who makes the radiators, is when radiator problems started to occur in the 2005 Pathfinder/Xterra/Frontier (leaking coolers) and the 2004 Titans (lower radiator tank leaks and cracks).

R50's have their share of common problems, but most are not a big issue that will lead to an expensive repair, like the R51 radiator issue. Some of the R50's with the VQ35DE engine did have some problems with the screws falling out of the power valves (inside the intake) and dropping into the combustion chambers; I assume the QX4's had some as well. This was due to insufficient locktite being applied to those screws. Should you have yours addressed, I can't say. But, if yours are among those that didn't get enough locktite on them, it could potentially save an engine.

Front strut tower rust/rot was an issue, as well, and recently addressed with a recall. You should contact a Nissan dealer with your VIN # and have them check for any open recalls/campaigns.

Awesome, thank you for the information. I will look into the screws in the power valves. Are they difficult to get to?

You have to remove the upper intake plenum to get to them. You might be able to find some threads on the procedure or even some YouTube vids.
