2002 QX4 Needs Timing Chain

Postby Oleschool » Fri Sep 18, 2015 11:45 am

I have a chance to buy this vehicle but I'm concerned that the valves may have hit the pistons. The guy says it was running and then shut off then it wouldn't start. He was told it was his timing chain. If its the timing chain ;can the chain be replaced? Or is it more likely;y that that engine is toasted?

I'd be buying it without seeing it.

Any suggestions? I can do the chain no sweat but do not want to have to pull the engine if this is an interference engine.

Thanks

It's an interference engine. It's possible that the chain could have jumped, but more common on these engines is when the screw(s) fall out of the power valve (because of insufficient Loctite on the threads) and into the combustion chamber, which could ruin the engine. I'd be considering the cost of a used engine replacement, just as a possibility.

Thanks. The unit would be an upgrade from my 97 Pathfinder as the QX4 has leather and the larger engine.I just don't want to take on too much of a project.
