Rear brake shoes

Postby docjones » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:44 am

How do I remove the brake drum to get to my shoes. A friend of mine said it maybe just a floater that can be taped off with a hammer. If not what do I have to unbolt or unscrew?

You can remove them with small hit to the drum with an hammer or you can screw 2 m8 bolts in the holes made for that. The more your screw the bolt in, the more th drum will move away... they come out very easily like this...

The only reason why I always have 2 m8 bolts in the truck... makes the maintenance a bit easier...

Thanks man. Now are those two screws 8mm long or are they just that size? I have a large varity of screws/bolts so I should have something like you describe in stock.

m8 is the metric size of the diameter. For the length, get yourself a good 1.5 to 2 inch long...

The only thing is that I do not remember is if the thread of the m8 bolt is 1 or 1.25 so... If I were you I would go the hardware store and get both (2 of each) and be done with it... if the store is not far from you, it will definitely be worth the trip.... you'll see :-)

summary : get 2 M8X1 by50mm (or longer) and 2 M8X1.25 by 50mm (or longer)

I agree with the steps provided. It's nice to know those kind of stuffs. I always got cautious when it comes to fixing break issues since it might lead to unexpected acceleration and cause accident.
