New fluid will never damage a transmission so long as it's the correct type. If a transmission fails after a fluid replacement and assuming it was done correctly, it would have failed in due time, anyway. Nissan calls for genuine Nissan Type "D" ATF in your trans, which is essentially original Dexron. Dexron and Dexron II have a thinner viscosity than Dexron III. While Dexron III is perfectly fine for topping off the trans fluid level, it should not be used for a fluid service as it has been known to cause sticking in the valve body. If you want an aftermarket alternative to Nissan Type "D," Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Castol Multi-import ATF are both acceptable.
