clunk clunk

Postby newpath » Wed Oct 10, 2012 6:18 pm

Brand new noise! Whenever I make a right turn, I hear a clunk noise in the rear. The number of clunks varies, and doesn't seem to have a any correlation with speed or sharpness of the turn...EXCEPT that it must be an actual turn. Not sure to any real exact degrees, but a curve doesn't do it (or I haven't been on a sharp enough curve). What could this be? How much might it cost?

It's kinda difficult to tell you the cost of a repair until you figure out what it is! Could be the exhaust hitting something, maybe? Badly worn suspension link bushing? Loose spare tire? Bad shock absorber or bound bumper? Someone's going to need to get under the vehicle and do some inspecting! Sometimes a rubber or plactic mallet can come in handy when trying to find undercarriage noises.

ha well I know that. I just thought maybe it could be narrowed down more. I did check the spare tire and bumper as soon as I got home after hearing the noise the first time. Those are good. It's actually scheduled for some maintenance stuff today and to fix another issue I'm having with it. I was just hoping to brace myself for the cost so that I wouldn't cry in front of the service guys. :P

well it was the exhaust. They said it had broken off (I don't remember if they specified the exact spot). Anyway.... they did something very surprising. They said it was going to be a 2.5 hour in labor fix. and rought $1000.00 in parts. And before I could poop my pants, they said that they were going to send it to the midas down the road and have them weld it back on. I have NEVER heard of a dealer offering to have work done somewhere else.

Huh....maybe their welder was broke or they didnt have one. So it was a cheap fix and they didn't use the $1000 in parts? If so, im happy for ya, but I dont know what they thinking lol. My exhaust recently broke also, but is was the tailpipe after the muffler (about a foot long section). Its a little louder now but nothing that is of immediate concern.

About to post my reply and read the rest.... pleased it was cheap, I was going to suggest a differential problem...but thats a pretty loud clunk and you can sometimes feel it through the drivetrain.

Yeah you will feel it for sure, especially if it is hitting the driveshaft or rear axle. Mine was rubbing the rear axle one time in another car....took me forever to figure it out because it only happened when turning, and even then it didnt happen all the time. But it was LOUD

Am replacing the sway bar link bar and sway bar bushing.

after replacing front sway bar bushing and link bar. The clank noise is gone and handling during turns improves.
