Starter Change

Well the well-mentioned valve cover leak claimed a victim this week - my starter. Has anyone changed a starter on their R50? Seems to me the worst part is getting it out around the passenger-front axle shaft. (Mine's a 96)

I thought I found the combination. Twist right, pull, twice left, push, pinch finger, cuss, once more right, but to no avail. The damn blood didn't even make a good lube. Do I need to take something else off too?
