Engine cut-off with Hot Temp.

Postby teggenberger » Sat Dec 08, 2012 10:46 am

My 99 PF started stuttering, while driving, after getting warm/hot, and while accelerating at around 2,000 rpm. It wouldn't quite out-right but felt like engine wanting to stall, if I let off the gas or slowed, it'd run normal again.

at first, I thought it had to do with accelerating going up-hill.
I wished I had noticed the Temp. Gauge before taking it to my mechanic.

He said the problem was with the Engine getting too hot and wanting to shutdown. Said it was a built-in safety mechanism to save the engine from over-heat damage.
He said the reason it was over-heating was because of a bad 'Fan Clutch'.
I found other posts relating to 'replacing' said 'Fan Clutch' but nothing about any 'Engine Cut-off' mechanism.
Anyone had a similar issue with their engine and over-heating, (due to 'fan-clutch or otherwise)?

thanks.

It wasn't the 'fan clutch' afterall.
Turns out, and i'm embarassed to say, it was that my coolant was about 3quarts low. (Even the auto shop missed that one).

But yeah, evidently when the engine gets too hot it has a cut-off feature.
Once i added the coolant - it ran normally.

unfortunately, i had already put the $50 fan-clutch on, the old one is probably still good. maybe not too late to return it?
