front bearings

Postby hybridmomentspass » Fri Dec 14, 2012 9:52 am

I need to replace my front bearings in my 2003 4x4
Im not paying a shop 500 bucks to do it. I dont have it,and cant justify it.
But I dont know what bearings to buy
Do you guys have a PN on the races/bearings etc needed for the job?

also - is there any detailed instructions on here on how to do the job on the pathfinder?
I've done bearings on other things, but first time working on this truck

love my Pathfinder, its been good to me, just need to take care of this issue

So why do you need to replace the bearings ?

These are standard tapered roller bearings and you can just grease them and replace the seals, and adjust.

Yes you need to replace them if they are damaged, but so long as no water has got to them, and there is no spalling or impact damage to the races they are Ok.

Just clean and check them for smoothness, by hand. Any roughness or visible damage replace them.

Repack, re-assemble and tighten to spec. You need the special lock nut wrench.

Follow the directions in the factory service manual.

As for replacement bearings, buy Timken, SPF or other name brand and they should be fine.

BTW when the truck was under warranty the dealer said the 30K re-pack was not needed, the to wait until doing the brakes. So with 105 K I have only repacked once.

I was told by a mechanic that he thought it was the bearings giving me the problem

heres the issue
0-39 (approx) mph the ride is nice and smooth
50 (approx) + mph the ride is nice and smooth
its the 40-50 range, i get a bad vibration, a roaring noise
before and after its fine, but those, approximately, ten mph i have an issue

please, if im/my mechanic that I went to is wrong, show me to the right path
I need to cure this issue

this special lock nut wrench, more info on that please?

Here is the tool,
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... ing=search

Sorry i didn't get notified of your reply, will check my settings.

So do the no cost stuff first.
Rotate wheels front to back.
if it changes get wheels and tires checked for out of round, balance etc.

report back...

Ian, have you used any of these locknut sockets to do the job? If Hybrid's 2003 is like my 2001, you will need a socket with positive protruding pins, not the flush ones as you show in your link.

If you have an autozone close by, it's model number 25072 or 27076. I can't remember which is the right size. These are for a Dana 44 and you wlll have to grind down 2 of the 4 pins/teeth.

I bought mine from CTA (with 2 pins) and here is the link.

Hybrid,
Your mechanic could be right. But I would also check front axle parts for excessive play, cracks, wear and other damage.
Also , check axial end play. Axial end play should be : 0 mm (0 in)
Adjust wheel bearing preload if there is any axial end play or
wheel bearing does not turn smoothly. These are free and easy to do. PM me if you need the factory service manual for the axle.
