Does anybody know if they can check the codes at any auto parts stores for the 1996 LE 4 x 4 with the check engine light?

Yes. All vehicles sold in the USA 1996 and later have to be OBD II compliant.

Do you know if the fuses have anything to do with the check engine light?

Usually not. Best thing to do is get the codes read and go from there.

I bet you that the code return will have to do with O2 sensors. Most of Pathfinder R50 has this code once or twice in their life time. I had one, replaced one, now it came back intermittently.

In regards to the O2 sensors, some of the VG33E engines had a ground issue that could cause O2 sensor codes. There's a supplemental ground harness available that runs from the EGI harness grounds to the right bank cylinder head. I believe it's for the 99-00 R50's and there is a TSB for it. As for the VQ35DE engines, I believe there was an updated ECM program available for rear O2 sensor codes on 01 and maybe 02 models along with a TSB referencing the issue and fix. That said, there are a lot of possible codes and without have the codes retrieved, there is no way of knowing whether it's an O2 sensor code, an evaporative emissions code (another common code in the R50's) or any other code.

It was an 02 code. My mechanic was able to reset it and and it has not come back on.
