engine randomly overheats

so i bought my 1999 pathfinder yesterday, drove it about 130 miles back and then another 150 around town at the end of those miles it randomly overheated and i had to have it towed. i was thinking it could possibly be the thermostat randomly sticking closed but does anyone know of anything else it could possibly be?

Sounds like someone sold it because of this problem.
