Hey! Glad to hear that the swap is going well. Slow is ok. Trust me. This rebuild is very slow.

Update: I decided to pull the oil pan so I could see the pump... Ahh, there's the culprit!

Here's another tip/trick to keep you satisfied. I cobbled this together in order to get the crankshaft bolt loose. After the pic (and before using a borrowed compressor and impact driver on the crank bolt) I wrapped the socket that's sitting in the cylinder with a shop rag to keep it from scoring the cyl wall.

Worked perfectly..

Keep at it...Here is my donor almost ready for the entire engine, tranny, transfercase pull. Notice I cut away the upper crossmember of the radiator support. The black thing in the left corner is the hood/fender of the other one..

Woohoo! Looks like progress! Are you having clearance issues with the hoist you're using? I rented one from sunbelt for $25 (for 24 hrs) and it it pulled the motor out no problem. I thought I'd have to remove the front wheels and drop it down low, but no, it was perfect. Also, that hoist fit in the back of our '04 'finder with the gate closed!

Oh wait... You're pulling the whole drivetrain as one unit, aren't you? I guess, that's a whole 'nuther situation entirely.

My update:

I reamed the cylinder ridges and pulled the pistons. I almost got the crank out but it seems I need to pull the block off of the engine stand to get it out all the way. Some bearings were spun unfortunately. My initial inspection leaves me hopeful that the crank won't need machined. I believe the motor only turned over a few revs after the oil pump imploded and left the bearings dry. I'll know for sure after I get it out, clean it up and finish the inspection.. Cross your fingers for me.

I now have the hood completely off, so boom clearance isn't an issue. Where on the motor did you attach the lifting chains?

I had the heads off already which may have made it easier. I attached one side to the (very stout) alternator bracket? Or maybe that was the other side? AC compressor bracket? It's been a month and I can't quite picture it now.

The other side I just bolted the chain to one of the motor mount bolt holes.

Wow.. Sorry. I wish I knew for sure.

Found a pic. This might help slightly. (The rope was just used for stabilizing and slightly tilting the motor.)

No.. Winter has slowed me down. I'm getting the itch to get back to it though.

Long overdue update

Postby Teeter » Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:40 am

I've been plugging away as time permits.

I got the camshaft and journals machined. I cleaned up the block, the pistons, the oil pan etc. I put new rings on the pistons, honed the cyl walls and basically buttoned up the bottom end.

I installed that portion in the truck this past weekend and started connecting everything.. working from bottom up. By the way, installation meant I finally had to deal with the fact that I didn't leave the torque converter with the tranny when I pulled the motor. I was worried about indexing it, but I was able to figure out what exact position it was in originally using photographs.

*****Pathfinder/Xterra VG33E (automatic) engine pull note******
Repair manuals indicate that you need to keep the torque converter held in the tranny bell housing when extracting the motor. What they don't seem to mention is that the TC is bolted to the fly wheel and there is no apparent way to get to the bolts. If you remove the the engine to tranny bolts, remove the starter, and THEN remove the metal plate that sits there you can indeed access these 4 bolts. I didn't realize this until later.

The heads are all back together (and looking sexy.)

Those will go in in the next day or so. I'm suddenly very close to finishing. Which is a slight bummer in a way. I've enjoyed my evenings in the shop wrenching on this thing with a beer in hand and the Cleveland Indians on the radio.

Wish me luck!

I thought I'd be firing it up today but a few annoying things slowed me down. Then I stripped the distributor mounting plate. I think it's made of butter. I'll deal with that tomorrow. Anyway.. Good excuse to sit in the pool and listen to a dramatic extra innings walk off win by the tribe!
