Gear shift will not lock

Postby penoe01 » Tue Sep 17, 2013 5:28 pm

I have a 1997 Pathfinder SE 4x4. When I shift throught the gears it will not lock into 1 or 2, it just springs back up to drive. even in drive it feels a little loose like it could easily be pushed out of gear. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

IIRC, there is a shift cable that is controlled by the shifter. It's possible it could be binding inside the cable, but you'll have to get under the vehicle to check it out to be sure.

I looked under the vehicle while someone else shifted through the gears. The cable advances the lever on the side of the transmission but it doesn't stay there. It just moves back up to drive when you take pressure off the shifter. Any ideas?
