Help me identify this leak?

Hello -

I was changing oil this after noon on my 2003 SE and saw a build up of what looked like engine oil on something I don't know what. Here are three different images of the same component:

I'm guessing the part has something to do with the 4WD capapbility, but, again, I'm not certain.

Can a more trained eye tell me what I saw today?

Looks like the outer axle shaft seal is weeping a little.

Thanks for the response. Is this simply a seal replacement? If so, it doesn't sound like a major undertaking and an easier job for my mechanic to perform.

Umm. you need to factor in the "Murphy's Law" portion of the repair. I seriously think the differential will need to be dropped to get to the axle tube and slide the axle out. If that's the case BOTH CV axles will need to be disconnected along with their axle supports. Front driveshaft would need to be disconnected along with various differential support bolts. The attached shows the axle. There are 2 seals that would need to be replaced 38542P (oil seal) and 40227Y (grease seal). So, no, it's not a simple seal repair. If Nissan was good at one thing it was making seemingly easy repairs major money makers for their mechanics!

LOL! Please forgive my ignorance. I"m laughing as I respond. Very naive of me. I do appreciate your further insight!

No sweat, as a Murphy, "Murphy's Laws" are pretty much interwoven throughout my life That's why there is beer!
Personally, if it were me, I would wait until it you have a better leak. It could weep like that for quite a while with no harm. If it starts leaving spots on the driveway...then it needs attention.
