Electrical Fan upgrade

Postby valenburg » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:16 pm

I was talking with a couple of friends at work and the subject of taking out the belt fan and throwing in an electrical fan in our vehicles came about. I know this can be done for a pretty reasonable price but some info is needed:

How much air flow is need?
Would a single large fan setup or a dual fan setup (for A/C) be necessary?
Would the Standard 185 on and 170 off be sufficient for the pathfinder?
(for the heavy towers) Would a cooling fan for the trans cooler be beneficial?

I was wondering if any of could answer any of the above?
I tried looking into the frontier and X forums but couldn't find any specs. THis could help open up some power and possibly fuel economy.

I think you'd be looking at more than one fan. The HP required to turn the factory fan would be too much for an electric motor, the load at startup would be too high.

We actually do this on transit buses, E-Fan is the latest fad, in the interest of fuel economy.

The fan shroud changes, to incorporate mounting of smaller motors and fans. There is a control module that only kicks in fans when needed, and in succession instead of all at once to reduce the peak electrical load.

Haven't seen anything like this for passenger vehicles yet.

It looks like they need a better shroud for that double fan set-up.

Flex-a-lite makes a pretty nice set-up.

I have, there are computer controllers for electric fans now that ramp up the fan from 25% all the way to 100% so you dont hit the electrical system with 60amp load all at once. They also have inputs for a/c as well as window switches for variable times during load or hill accent etc.
