Why am i getting bad gas milage?

Postby kryptek213 » Tue Mar 25, 2014 8:55 am

I am getting such bad gas mileage after the accident. I have 2006 Pathfinder all stock and everything is fixed after the accident and i am getting exactly 12 mpg and i am spending 70 bucks every week. what am i supposed to get like 14 or 15 mpg out of the little 4.0 v6 engine? i also have a sub woofer in my trunk idk if that effects anything(actually i used to get 10 mpg before installing it) i am an easy driver. any body having this issue?

Well if your mpg went up from 10 to 12 when you added the subwoofer...I think you're onto something!

Your posts match your user name...they're cryptic. What is this accident you speak of, what was the damage, etc? How many miles/tanks were at 10mpg and now at 12mpg? You say bad mileage after the accident...what were you getting before?

well I crashed into a pole doing 80 on the road and hit the right side of the truck. bending the frame inward. nothing major happened to the engine(thank God). I got everything fixed new frame, radiator. pretty much everything is fine and before I think I used to get around 14 or 15 that was around 64000 miles and not at 67000 miles I get 12 mpg. skinny2, what do you get on average? thank you

I honestly love the r51 pathfinders they are so strong, my truck should have been totaled after the accident. it still ran after the hitting the pole!!
I don't think I am ever gonna get rid of this truck lol

I get 18-20 but drive 25k a year mainly on the highway. If you were getting 14-15 before the repair there's no reason it shouldn't be getting similar now. Assuming it was fixed correctly. A slight amount of frame bending or alignment issues can kill mpg. You'll find out soon if your tires start wearing funny. Frame damage is pretty tough to put back 100% as-new.

I agree. Something is fishy. Keep an eye on how the tires wear.

I average 12mpg with city driving, even lower with the winter blend gas.

there is slight bend on the right side i can see the grille little crooked so iam assuming a little bent but idk how it effects the mpg so bad. the frame bent is not that bad at all. they did some stuff wrong but i fixed it all up. the only problem is they didnt put the radiator in place so its a little loose(which i am not having any issue with it) but i am getting it fixed soon. no bend in alignment and none of the tires are wearing out so i am assuming not issue with the alignment.

Did they replace, what I laughingly call, the skid plate? I took mine off so I didn't have to mess with it to change the oil. My milage dropped about 2 mpg on the average. Just put it back on.

A decrease in gas mileage after an accident is a common complaint. Unfortunately, there are quite a few things that can cause the drop, including a faulty frame, damaged suspension components (shocks/struts), damaged wheel components (bearings/hub), damaged exhaust components (manifold), missing aerodynamics components (such as the skid plate mentioned above).

I would take it to a dealership and pay the $80 to have it checked out with a fine-toothed comb. In my experience, body shop guys haven't been the most competent of the car care professionals.

Also, make sure you're measuring your MPGs properly – not with the dash meter (I feel like those are more for entertainment). When the gas light comes on, fill 'er up, write down how much and reset the odometer. The next time the gas light comes on, do some quick math and you have an accurate measure of how much gas you're using.

Also, I have to say... you guys are all getting terrible mileage! My V8's average hovers around 16 and part of my commute includes DC Beltway traffic.
