V8 vs V6 R51

Postby Kestral » Thu Dec 25, 2014 5:37 pm

I was wondering is the V8 R51 Pathy that much faster in a drag race then the V6 model?

I researched this a lot when I was shopping and there wasn't much of a difference. The test results I found had them within a couple tenths IIRC.

The disadvantage of the V8 is tall rear gearing...the final is somewhere around 2.9 compared to 3.35 with the V6. So the V8 actually feels a bit weak on the highway (particularly towing) and requires a downshift where the V6 will pull all day in 5th gear. There are a number of members that have swapped out the differentials to get lower gears and have seen a significant performance increase.

tall (~2.97 iirc) gearing hinders the v8 quite a bit. some have done a swap (with a titan or older model qx56) to a 3.36 ratio...one day i'll get to that.

but, put a bully dog tuner on it (~$275 on craigslist for mine) and it will kick the pants off a (non-bully dog'd) v6.

back in texas with 33in tires i put down 297hp to the wheels (can't remember torque) with the bully dog, so you can imagine what it can do on stock wheels...

If you really want to drag race a Pathfinder---and I'm not sure why anyone would---you could always get the V6 and put on the Stillen supercharger!
