The direct replacement is 96-99.5 pathfinder's with a 3.3 engine. The xterra's with a 3.3 engine will bolt up, but the wiring harness MAY be a little shorter, (easy to change with yours) and you may have to swap your transmission's rear bell housing on to the xterra's transmission, again, easy to do. I was going to do this a few weeks ago and would know for sure, but I fixed my shifting issue with a junkyard valve body. If the xterra or pathfinder has a 3.5 liter, you will probably have to change the input bell housing as well. There are just bolt's holding these bell housings on. You are not tearing into the center section of the transmission, so no worries' there.

the 3.5 engine RE4R01A transmissions have various improvements over the 96-99 3.3L Pathfinder RE4R01A transmissions. I know for a fact the valve body and shift solenoid's from an 04 xterra work in a 98 pathfinder, I put them in mine.
