Drain plug washer?

Postby Kestral » Tue Jul 05, 2016 5:02 pm

How many of you change the crush washer on the oil drain plug every oil change? I just changed my oil last week and I did not have a crush washer this time so I just reversed the old one on the plug and guess what? Yes it is leaking at the drain plug! Not terrible but enough to bother the heck out of me!

I change mine all the time. The part number is 11026-01M02. They also work on the trans pan drain plug. I have three Nissans, so I just buy them by the bag off of Ebay, which is a lot cheaper than getting them from Nissan. They come in bags of 10, 20, 30, etc.
FYI, the transfer case and diff drain/fill plugs use a different washer. It's part number is 11026-4N200.

SMJ thank you for the advice on the different washer for the other drain areas that is quite helpful.

I think I am going to do a quick oil change on this one say 2,500 miles it's not leaking that bad but it's just annoying and I am driving it so much this summer also towing my camper. I hate to dump 5+ quarts of Mobil 1 early but dumping the oil into a clean container to change the drain plug washer then dumping the oil back into the motor does not thrill me. I would worry to much that I dumped some contaminants back into the motor and that just worries me.

i replace mine everytime i install the drainplug back in
these washers (all drain plug washers) seal by being crushed
each time they are re-used, they get a bit thinner, increasing the possibility of a leak
each time they get re-used, they have less capability to crush, thus putting additional tension on the threads of the drain plug and the oil pan
with a new washer and properly torqued drain plug, i never give it a second thought until the next oil change
also, i HATE oil (or any) leaks
