Towing and rear spring

Postby ALO604 » Sun Sep 29, 2019 11:04 pm

I'd rather not have to go read thru tons of posts. Can someone recommend a rear spring replacement over the stock? I do not want any lift just more load ability to offset hitch weight. I'm using equalizer hitch which helps but it's not enough. 2010 4x4 LE Pathfinder

springs

So are these moog springs actually stronger than the stock or is this just an OEM replacement?
I don't have any issues without the trailer on the hitch, don't want to replace with the same thing.

The Moog springs are technically a stock replacement, but they are made a bit stronger and they don't have the issues of bottoming-out over bumps or sagging that the factory originals are famous for. Another thing that helps is Airlift 1000 air bags, which run about $80, work well and are pretty simple to install. They will also work with either of the two springs mentioned.

The Moog springs are the way to go! They are constant rate springs which are better for towing.

A pointer on the air lift install, make sure you put the airbag into the coil before you put it into the rear lower control arm. The Moog springs have a few more coils, making it difficult to impossible to get the airbag into the coil the way you are able to with the factory spring.

Curious about your profile picture. What does that trailer weigh and what's the tongue weight? Are the Moog springs what you used?
I am going to install the air bags regardless of what spring I put in.

415lb tongue weight, 4600lbs dry weight, 6000lbs fully loaded.

Yes I used the NAPA branded rear springs, made by federal mogul (Moog), they are the same constant rate coils we are recommending.

The air lift 1000 is the best most cost effective kid you could do to your pathfinder imho.

You can also look into the V8 rear spring option. If you have a v6. I got the generic autozone version when my original oem was cracked. Seems a little bit stronger than oem. Less say but no lift.

I've looked at these too. Seems like a good option. Would be Moog # 81117, and the rated load is 785kg vs 721kg, so an extra 64kg x 2 of load capacity (at least as far as the springs are concerned) which is good.

At the time, I didn't have a choice and had to go with the NAPA/FM/Moog springs due to a time constraint. Now I'd change them, but it seems wasteful to just chuck the NAPA/FM/Moog springs I have already.

Yes I don't want any lift over stock. Don't want it to look raked up
in the back.

V8 or V6 coils

Postby ALO604 » Tue Oct 01, 2019 12:18 pm

I contacted moog about the coil differences. the 2010 4wd V8 spring has pigtail ends. The V6 has squared ends. So apparently not the same fitment.

Maybe SMJ can weigh in, but that makes no sense. The mounting, interface, and components in the rear suspension are identical between the V6 and V8. Same Coil Bucket on the bottom, same spring spacer on the top. (I checked both OEM and Aftermarket parts sources and diagrams from OE).

I know right. I got the spec sheets which had these differences listed, which confused me too. So I called them and confirmed the difference.
There is also a .038 free height difference and what they call a design load difference of 141lbs.
