Tis the season for dead batteries

Postby Budrbean » Thu Nov 04, 2010 8:58 pm

Just a heads up with anyone that still has the Nissan stock battery.....they only last about 3 years. So with the cold weather coming, go get it checked.

Mine died tonight in the walmart parking lot (thank goodness it was somewhere that sells batteries). I had a 2006 Frontier that the battery died in 3 years and it died right when the weather got cold like this one did. The stock battery is only rated at 550 CCA and they suck for sure. I stepped up to a 850 CCA battery this time

I replaced stock battery couple weeks ago. It had date 11.2005 on it. Maybe I was just lucky ? :D

I replaced my stocker last year with another stocker. Now with the colder weather I noticed it has a slower crank after sitting for a few days. Good thing I have an optima waiting in the garage! :)

I went Optima Red top on my replacement. Worth it in my book. They have a 3 year free replacement warranty. Most normal batteries are prorated.

My early model year 2006's battery gave it up this summer (so figure it was about a 4.5 year life). Replaced it with a Duralast Gold (Autozone is near my house and opens at 7AM so that was the winner).

I just purchased the DieHard Platinum P-5, comes with 4-year free replacement: 100 month prorated warranty.

I find battery life is relative to vehicle maintenance. If you don't check the water/acid levels in the battery and the level falls below the top of the lead plates, the battery will fail prematurely. Simple things like keeping the connections clean and free of corrosion and adding distilled water when the battery level is low, and not running accessories while the engine isn't running will dramatically extended the life of any battery.

It was my understanding that batteries these days are "maintenance free" and you cant top the water off (?)

If the battery has removable caps, you can add water.
