It means exactly the same thing-it's the whole R-3 conditional thing. I've been racking my brain trying to think of somewhere that I might have seen this sign, but I'm not coming up with anything-at least for the Sierras.

I know you didn't mean it as a joke, but I started cracking up when you wrote "Yosemite National Park, just west of Mammoth." In summer, sure. In winter, almost every pass is completely shut down in the Sierras south of Tahoe. That drive from Mammoth to Yosemite just added a few hundred miles to one's trip.

They are made in my hometown. Used to use the hill it's on for max speed runs in my friends old toyota corolla. The company make chains for everything, mostly for skidders that pull logs out for delivery to the paper mills.
