I used to own a 2004 Mazda 6 S. It was the 3.0 V6. Great sporty little car. Actually traded it in Feb 2011 for our 08 Pathfinder. Some good forums to look into are:

6crew.com (I still visit. Lots of good info on the cars there)
mazda6club.com

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

went to the dealer to see what they got today. they got an 08 ford edge nicely loaded with 98000 on it and a 08 subaru legacy with i think about 40000 on it. they said the ford would be closer to the price range we need to be. Image Image Image Image

Edge isn't that great on fuel in the real world. My uncle has a newer one and he was impressed with my trip meter reading 18.9mpg. Says he barely gets that. Morale of the story...trading for something to save 2mpg probably won't pay off. Subaru will obviously be better but they're pretty thirsty too with that AWD system. This only works if you go to a truly fuel efficient vehicle. Buy a 4cyl accord and maybe you'll really save money.

Neither of these can be much cheaper than your '06 Pathfinder can they??

That Subaru has an awkward gap between the hood and the bumper trim on both sides of the grille. Make sure it hasn't been in an accident.

One of the guys at work traded his Xterra for the Edge, he is not happy with the fuel economy.

It just looks like the Subaru's hood release is popped. Personally we owned an 07 Legacy (minor cosmetic differences) in 5spd, that color for a year. I loved that little car, fun to drive, even soothing (for me). The Fuel eco was roughly 22-24 for an avg mixed cycle with a pretty agressive primary driver. I was crushed (no pun intended) when a local teen rear-ended it back in October and totaled it. We ended up replacing it with a Parika (Burnt Orange) 09 Impreza. I don't know if its the color or the body style but it seems to insite D-baggery (e.g. getting cut off, people trying to race, tailgating).
Keep that in mind for the Edge.

IMVBO 40K on a Subie VS 90k on the Ford, Subie all day long.

yes the hood was popped on the subie. we had two legacy wagons before and got ok service with them. with trading to the edge my payments will drop about $100 so thats my big savings right now. with the oil i use i will gain about 3 mpg on the edges fuel economy. i love subaru but it is alittle cramped inside compaired to the edge. it even has more room then the pathfinder. i would prob knock a hole in the oil pan of the subie since its not an outback. i have a hilly and bumpy driveway.

they ended up getting the edge and the legacy and not a mazda6. got approved for the edge but only for 60 months not 72 because of the milage. so he wanted me to look at the maxima. same year and color as the pathfinder and a few less miles.

You have to go with a cheaper vehicle like the Maxima, although I would recommend you try to refinance the PF. You'll lose money trading/selling and lose money again on the next vehicle you buy...plus tax. You won't make that up in fuel savings with a Maxima. But you're on the right track..you have to buy something that's similar to what you have but cheaper (hopefully). Going six years on a an Edge with 100k miles is an absolutely horrible idea and just digging yourself in deeper. Are you upside down on the PF?

Looks good. Nice cars and relatively roomy. The dealer is a solid $3,000 too high on their asking price based on what I'm seeing on auction values. Pay too much and it will take you a lot of years to recoup that fuel savings.

i.e. you're going to be saving maybe $1,400 a year in fuel by making this switch. I'd say if you make a good deal on the Max it will take you two years to pay-back making this switch. Overpay by a couple grand and it just adds years onto your payback.
