New owner Just checking in.

Postby 71olds » Thu May 09, 2013 6:30 pm

Just picked up a 2010 Pathfinder SE Journey with 30k on it 9/2009 production date. Had a 06 4.6l Mountaineer & it was killing me constant problems finally I cut my losses & went back to Nissan.

Always a Nissan fan I was a Z guy before kids (Still have my 83 280zx 2+2 turbo 5spd) & wife had back to back Maximas but had to give them up when they quit offering a manual (her 03 se 6pd was a great car)

Anyway Looks like the biggest weakness in the truck is the Radiator.
I know it is warrantied till 8/80 & I have 30k on my truck now.

Would you let it be till 9/2017 & then install a trans cooler bypass. I figure If it goes I get a new tranny or Bypass it now & be safe.

I thought it would be safe for a bit but a guy at work has a 05 he bought new has 120k on it now & his rad gave up the ghost at 25K & took the trans out with it. was all covered but was shocked that happened at such low mileage.
No pics of the Path yet but here is the Z

Congrats on the Pathy! And love the Z.

As for your radiator, you're on the tail end of the problem. I think they we're redesigned in 2011. Personally, I would do nothing until you hit 80K miles and then replace the whole radiator. I've always been from the camp that the transmission fluid goes through the radiator for a reason (to cool and warm the fluid) and bypassing that process may cause some unwanted side effects.

A radiator swap is relatively painless and definitely a DIY-able job.

Good luck and let's see some pictures of that truck!

Little update

Starter went today at 30760 miles cost me $109 with tax (well 149 but I will get back 40 for the core of the old starter) at autozone & about an hour to install.
Had to call three part stores to find one in stock but I thought the cost was reasonable.

I hope I made the right choice not getting the warranty. When the Starter went my wife had a fit calling me plenty four letter words for cheeping out & not buying the warranty.

Welcome, while I love those Z's too... I think I'd be interested in seeing your namesake (71 Olds) as well. If I read into the name correctly.

Don't feel bad. Statistically you made a wise decision not buying one. They are carefully crafted to not be in your favor through what they cover, how they cover it and tricky contractual language. My wife and I have been screwed twice by extended warranties.

Don't feel bad I do all my own work for simple stuff starters brakes wheel bearings stuff like that so I still feel I made the correct move.
Still a repair after 250 miles was a little upsetting.

Anyway Here is my 71 Olds. I sold it to my brother in law last year after having it for 15 years. I never drove it & it just stat in the garage. 6 MPG on super made me want a new toy.
