While I didn't have highway numbers prior to install (I don't do much "true" highway driving at all), my combined driving has increased significantly from the 14.5 I was previously getting. Given the average MPG increase and the current cost of fuel being about 4 bucks a gallon, my "break even" point where I'm actually in the green on this purchase should happen in about 8,500 miles... Not bad! I always like ROI's with less than a 9 month payback!!

I was wondering if you could offer some updated fuel efficiency numbers? I've been eyeballing this product for a while and I don't wanna be disappointed 6 months from now. Also, what octane gas have you been using?

Finished installing the Volant today and what a PITA it was. They provide you with a little bracket (just a piece of metal) to relocate your horns. However, there are two problems with this:

1) there's no way the horns would fit in the area they claim
2) You won't be able to install the ram air scoop.

The instructions say to leave the scoop off on the PF, but I think that defeats a key benefit of the intake.

So I relocated the horns below the bracket that supports the bumper (had to pop the grill out) and soldered longer wires to the stock connector.

The second issue was the bottom most mounting hole didn't line up with the stock location. After grinding away with the Dremel, I was able to make it fit. The hole was about 3/8" off. Also the bolt they provide is too short to reach.

Only drove it up and down my street, so I don't know if I got any gains, but it makes a mean sound when you floor it. Under normal acceleration there isn't much difference, but at WOT, it's going to turn some heads

Any updates from owners? Still thinking about it, but only if an mpg improvement.

I haven't noticed any difference and have done quite a few 250 mi + highway trips since installing it

NVSteve,

I've had mine in since March and put about 6500 miles on since installation. Albeit not that much, I did see an overall MPG gain.. 0.8 MPG increase in combined city/highway driveway (about 70% city).

What's the average price on the intake? Is it a cold air or just a short ram?

Price runs about $275... It's a fully enclosed air box that has a scoop that attaches to the box and pulls in air from just behind the grill just to the left of the driver's side headlight (when facing the truck from the front). The only thing I had trouble with was that I had to relocate the horn and ended up shaving a corner of the horn bell off with a dremel to get it to fit. Not too much of a pain to install, and I've been extremely happy with it.

Did most of you go with the powercore filter or the paper/oil? I was cleaning my filter today and noticed that the box is warped on the engine side, meaning the lid is not flush. I'm betting that at some point of my ownership, someone checked the filter while doing the oil and didn't get the lid on correctly. It's permanently bowed out now:

I hopped online & started looking at volant prices and came across a Frontier forum post where everyone is talking about the powercore causing error codes. I simply do not want another oiled filter ever again.

I think you're ok. Small curve is normal here and does not effect the seal on the filter - critical area is filter seal against the upper lid. These boxes are a pain to close properly - you got to slide the tabs in the loops on the left side, then push the lid closed as you re-install the latches. Its possible to get it to line up almost perfectly, but the small curve on the left of box where the loops are will always show. Both of my Paths (06 and 10) had this issue. On my 2010 Path the dealer actually broke one loop while closing it without paying attention. New botom half of the box is $20 if you ever wanted to replace yours.
Regarding Volant CAI, I'm not sure its worth it - too much money for some extra noise and very little (if any) improvements. I decided to spend my modey on the Bully Dog instead.

Steve,

I know what you are talking about. My 08 has the same problem. Been that way since I bought it last year. The middle clip does not even fit in the hole on the bottom and you can actually see some of the air filter.

I think we can all agree it's a pretty lame design. I'll have to check the Xterra and see if it is bowed yet. I'll also have to take care & remember this the next time I wash the engine compartment.

Yes, its pretty apparent they used the wrong resin in the construction of this air box. Very easy to put back together wrong, you have to ensure that all 3 tabs are engaged!

I have the exact issue on my 05. Fortunately, we don't have turbos, or this would be a recipe for disaster! As such, without turbos, you'll only run into major issues if running in really dusty environments, and then really only in environments where the dust is not easily combustible and will cause wear on rings and cylinder walls.

Please excuse my ignorance here but I thought the mass air flow sensor would compensate for whatever air volume comes through.

If this is the case, no matter what you do, the fuel to air mixture will be the same.

Granted if you have more air and colder air you will have more power but the mpg shouold not change.

Help me understand.

Great! I happen to live in a very dusty place & all my local trips involve even more dust. I guess I could duct tape that edge...

The concern isn't about air flow, if you are chiming in on the warped housing, but all the crap that can be sucked in after the filter.
