Burp the Pathfinder. I can't help but laugh.

checked my 05 pathy today while changing the oil. Noticed that it doesn't pump out great heat at idle, but it has also been bloody cold here (-30C).

I was down about a quart. I'm sure I will have to top up again, as the air makes its way out of the system.

I have an auto starter on my pathfinder but since no great heat pumps out while in idle it kinda sucks!

Anyone have this problem?

Also I have vents in the upper rear, I was told by the service guys that heat doesnt come out those vents just AC!

I find that hard to believe can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

Can someone post the "procedure" for this. I have the FSM as a PDF but could not find a toubleshooting section and nothing about burping the radiator.

I have the same exact issue, with the truck not warking up at idle, whether I remote start or not. Driving, it warms up sporatically.

Thanks.

Thats bull$hit. Check your coolant level. My rear vents blew only cold air, until I topped off the cooling system a couple times. Good heat coming from there now, enough to defrost the windows.

Also would explain why you have no heat at idle.

My truck was down 3 quarts of coolant, never indicated an overheat situation on the gauge, truck ran fine, but it was down alot of fluid.

Have a search over at nissanhelp.com and you'll see where the techs specifically post the process along with references. Otherwise:

drive the front up on ramps
open radiator before it heats up and the system gets pressurized
let the system warm to full temp
IIRC rev up to 2-3k rpms several times
let it idle a few moments
add any fluid if necessary
cap it and bring it back down

Having worked for a Nissan dealer I've seen a few pathfinders with leaking headgaskets & the coolant going out the tail pipe. Have the dealer do a hydrocarbon test - sniff the tail pipe. That will tell alot.
If you are hearing a hissing sound inside the car on shut off, the heater core could be leaking. Check under the pass side carpet for moisture.

wouldn't the oil be a good indicator if the head gasket was shot? Just did an oil change (overdue by a bit too), and the oil was the picture of perfection.

Also, no abnormal white smoke from the tailpipe.

I do tow with it, a pretty heavy trailer. Its within the tow limits, but I kinda wonder if the coolant was old or something, and it managed to evaporate or something? I dunno.

Sounds like a vaccuum leak to me

Postby Litey » Thu Jan 08, 2009 9:26 am

Sounds like some vacuum operrated switch is not getting enough vaccuum at idle to keep the flap or vwhatever open , add thottle,
adds vaccuum and then the heat flows in ...
He says he hears it leaking with engine off ....

I would have asked the service guy what the purpose of the red marks on the rear temperature control knob were for then. I'd have loved to hear that answer!!

I took this in to the dealer as I had this problem 2 years ago. The work order said no problem found and the the cause was suspected as air pocket in the coolant line. Just mentioned that they topped the fluid off.
Also, I notice now that when I shut the truck off, I hear a a hiss that seems to last about 2 seconds as soon a the engine shuts off.

Any ideas?
I had the same exact problem with my 2005 pathfinder. Same hissing noise too. Dealer claimed it was an air pocket in the cooling system. They flushed and replaced the coolant. It worked for a bit, but started happening again. Also had problems with the air conditioning and leaks in the passenger side.
Not sure what the problems were since I traded in the 05 and purchased an 08 when the lease ended. I have no problems with HVAC since.

Well, I gave the "burp" methode a shot, and it seems to show positive results so far. Matter of fact, the air (when CC set to 90*) is REALLY hot now, even at idle. I actually had to pull may hand away as it started burning. I'll keep an eye on it for the next couple weeks and let you know how it goes.

Thank you everyone for your help thus far.

I did ask him that and he really didnt give me a straight answer. So you have vents in the back and now that you burbed it you probably nice heat in the back correct?
